The Acton Institute has posted a new translation as part of its ongoing outreach to the French-speaking world. The article, “La montée du communisme dans des habits catholiques,” describes efforts to use Catholic rhetoric to promote the same statist aims once advanced by the former Communist Party in Eastern Europe.
The article notes how history proves the encroaching power of the state, advanced under the guise of promoting Catholicism, can as easily be used to drive people of faith to society’s margins:
Le communisme est remplacé par un nouvel appareil rhétorique. Mais c’est le catholicisme qui sort perdant. … Une fois que le pouvoir d’État est construit, sa coercition peut être utilisée au service de n’importe quelle idéologie. Ceux qui croient que l’État peut faire respecter l’orthodoxie catholique feraient bien de se souvenir de l’histoire. Des sociétés autrefois catholiques ont persécuté l’Église et consacré le sécularisme par la force, à la place de la foi. D’autres croient que les États-Unis sont une dystopie oppressive, qui est en train de se transformer rapidement en une théocratie chrétienne d’extrême droite. Ceux-là devraient être les premiers à refuser à l’État l’autorité nécessaire à faire advenir un tel destin.
